Solution to the problem of de-activated fire alarms in major renovation project

Published:  16 March, 2010

The major renovation and upgrade of the vast Sportpaleis Ahoy exhibition centre in Rotterdam provides an excellent example of how to overcome the problem of de-activated fire alarms whilst building work is underway - Tag Guard’s new Fire Alert provided the ideal solution.

Sportpaleis Ahoy exhibition centre in Rotterdam – one of the largest exhibition centres in Europe and home to concerts such as The Night of the Proms as well as sporting events such as the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament – is currently undergoing extensive renovation to upgrade facilities and accommodate more visitors.

Due to the fact that the complex is still open to the public during the renovation programme, it was essential that fire alarms throughout the exhibition centre were still operational but the extensive building works has meant that the permanent, hard-wired system had to be deactivated.  Tag Guard’s Fire Alert System was considered to be the ideal solution by the major contractor as the portable, wireless nature of the product range meant they were easy to install and could be moved to new locations as the renovation work progressed.  This temporary system will remain in place until the existing permanent fire alarm system at the Sportpaleis is re-commissioned or replaced at a later time.  Thus safety of the site personnel and the public are not compromised in any way.

“The temporary, wireless fire alarm system replaces the existing arrangement alarm by alarm,” explains Marc Claassen of BetaGuard, Tag Guard’s subsidiary in Holland.

“We have used the existing locations of the 90 smoke detectors and 50 hand triggered alarms and replaced them all by installing the Fire Alert wireless products.

“Whilst construction is underway it also allows us to decide whether a detector needs to be repositioned, which is easily done, or another option should be used such as a thermal or optical detector.

“A key benefit of the temporary detectors is that they can be operational within seconds.  As soon as they are put in place the base station picks up the signal allowing the detector to be programmed into the system; every detector has a unique ID and is wirelessly connected to a base station, which in turn is connected to a temporary control console located in the security offices of the complex.

“When there is an alarm signal there will be an audible warning as well as an on-screen alert at the control console – appropriate steps can then be taken such  alerting the emergency fire services. The system can also be monitored remotely at the 24/7 national control centre”, Claassen continues.

Fire has always been a constant danger on building and construction sites but combating this potentially lethal threat has now been made much easier with the introduction of highly effective, portable, wireless fire alarm products.   Large sites such as Sportpaleis are particularly challenging to keep safe and secure during the construction phase, but with the ease of use of these systems, safety will increase and sites can prevent unnecessary tragedies.
