Bob Whiteley: Fire Fighting Foam Systems Development of the new CEN Standard Abstract:
Published: 10 November, 2009
The paper will explain the background and basis for the new CEN standard for Foam systems. It will give an explanation of the scope of the standard and the protection concepts used with low, medium and high expansion foam systems. The paper will outline the new approach to system design which takes into account the performance parameters of the foam concentrate, the size and type of object being protected, and the height of the foam discharge devices.
For the first time this one standard will cover the entire range of foam system applications as well as their limitations. The paper will set out where foam systems can be effectively used and will address the foam and water supply requirements envisaged. The environmental issues addressed by the Working Group will be discussed along with the other considerations of testing of foam systems. Finally, the paper will address the status of the standard and schedule for its publication.
