Linked beneath the sea

Published:  11 June, 2009

Eurotunnel, the operator of the world’s longest undersea tunnel and one of its busiest rail routes, has chosen Sepura’s new STP8000 hand-held TETRA radio for its communications in emergency operations.

With three 50-km tunnels, this important link between France and the UK each year carries over eight million railway passengers, two million cars and nearly 1.5 million lorries.

The STP8000 radio is designed to withstand rugged conditions within the tunnels, including heat, possible impact and a humid and saline atmosphere. According to Sepura, the STP8000 has the most powerful audio and the largest colour screen in its class, offering exceptionally clear communications – and can overcome any weakness in network coverage through its built-in DMO repeater and 1.8 watts RF power. Soft keys minimise the number of key presses, to simplify use of the radio.

The contract was secured by Sysoco, Sepura’s partner in France, and is for use in the tunnel by both French and English emergency services in any incident or training exercise.

Pierre Letta, Marketing Director for Sysoco, said: “The demands in this contract were particularly exacting and we were able to supply a satisfactory solution thanks to the expertise of all parties – and the quality of Sepura’s new STP8000 radio.”
