In recent years, the Angus Emergency Foam Service has mobilised its emergency foam services for incidents in the UK, Japan, Turkey and Spain, and most recently in Libya. Indeed, since its inception in the late 1970s, it has responded to customer requests for large quantities of firefighting foam and equipment by road or air within 24 hours. Depending on the scale and location of the emergency, Angus Fire says that up to 40,000 litres of foam concentrate can be deployed within two hours, with additional stocks following rapidly.
Following a massive tank fire at a major Libyan oil company, said Angus Fire, employees worked around the clock to mobilise 260,000 litres of foam to combat the fire. The Angus Fire team brought together emergency foam stocks held at the company’s facility in Bentham, North Yorkshire (UK), reallocated current orders and immediately increased foam production. Emergency airlifts, organized by the customer, ensured delivery to the site.
Within the first 24 hours, said Angus Fire to IFJ, its customer was supplied with 80,000 litres of foam, which was airlifted via two DC10 aircraft. By the second day, the total order had increased to 200,000 litres. “We worked back-to-back shifts over the UK bank holiday weekend to produce this large quantity of foam,” said Charles Boon, General Manager of Angus Fire. “Thanks to our emergency response operations we were able to meet our customer’s needs during this extremely critical time.”
Additional shipments of 120,000 litres and then 40,000 litres were requested on the third and fourth day to finally extinguish the blaze.
Angus also shipped an additional 20,000 litres of foam to an adjacent oil company in order to replenish stock used to fight the tank fire. In total, Angus Fire provided 260,000 litres of foam in less than a week.
