Global level networking

The IAFC, tells F&R that it has put together an exciting program of international sessions and speakers, in conjunction with the Institution of Fire Engineers.

The first is the UK Approach to Air Management, presented by Paul Young, CFO, Devon-Somerset Fire Brigade. This session takes an in-depth look at the United Kingdom’s outstanding firefighter safety and survival record. Their impeccable record offers lessons departments worldwide can learn from.

Both the United States and England have recently suffered terrible firefighter fatalities: the furniture store fire in South Carolina took nine lives, and the UK warehouse fire killed four brigade members. Talking publicly about such an event is uncommon in the UK fire service, so FRI attendees will get a rare look at the details of this incident. The Charleston post-incident review team will also report their findings, helping others clearly understand what happened that day. These two views of risk management summarize the different cultures and how their philosophies and policies apply to these multi-death incidents.

The WSLLC Fire and Emergency Services in Iraq have provided professional fire and emergency service to the US and Coalition Forces military installations since April 2004. They began with only 12 personnel and no apparatus. They lived and worked out of an old military-issued tent. Having grown substantially, they now have more than 41 stations and over 1,800 personnel. This program offers full disclosure of their unique experiences, allowing delegates to see why this organization prides itself on its innovations and unprecedented accomplishments.

These three sessions are just a few of the  highlights of what is in store for the global fire-service community at Fire-Rescue International.

The conference kicks off with the FRI Welcome Reception on Wednesday, 13 August, with a special welcome for international guests and first-time attendees. This relaxed environment allows visitors to meet colleagues from around the world, and these relationships are considered to be as valuable as any education received in the classroom.

Friday morning, the general session features Dr Denis Waitley, who has inspired and challenged groups from the boardrooms of multinational corporations to the control rooms of NASA’s space program. He served as the chair of psychology on the US Olympic Committee’s Sports Medicine Council and has written several international best sellers. Waitley’s presentation will focus on core values, and helping today’s leaders have a positive impact on those they lead and the communities they serve.

Immediately following the general session will be the grand opening of the exhibit hall. With over 600 vendors showcasing apparatus, hazmat suits, fire helmets, communications tools, new computer technology and the best that the fire service has to offer, the expo hall will serve for two days as the perfect opportunity to see the latest in products, services and technology. This one-stop shop is ideal for those ready to make a significant purchase and those who are fact-finding and doing the research for future department essentials.
