Two big beasts (and a small one)

Published:  05 August, 2016

North Peace Regional Airport in Fort St John, British Columbia, Canada has taken delivery of two Oshkosh Striker 1500 4x4 ARFF trucks - and a puppy.

The trucks have been purchased as a result of North Peace Regional Airport becoming a Class 6 airport after surpassing the threshold of over 180,000 passengers movements in 2014, meaning that the airport could no longer rely on local municipal firefighting services.

For the last year the airport had been leasing two fire engines in order to provide self-supplied fire suppression capabilities.

Each of these massive machines are over 3.3m wide, 4m tall and 11m long; they tip the scales at over 28.5 tonnes and can carry 5,600l of water as well as over 700 litres of foam and dry chemical powder.

Both trucks are equipped with thermal cameras mounted on the roof turret and a 1500-watt generator, and they are designed to be able to fight fires with only one on-board operator.

The trucks were also custom-fit with adapters to enable compatibility with the City of Fort St John and District of Taylor’s water supplies.

In addition to its firefighting power the airport also upgraded its wildlife management capability via Daisy, a 17 week-old Labrador that is currently training as a bird control specialist.
