Marine casualties and incidents

Published:  03 December, 2015

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) has published the 2014 overview of marine casualties and incidents.

The report gathers information on accidents from the European Marine Casualty Information Platform (EMCIP).

The Annual Overview of Marine Casualties & Incidents presents casualty statistics on ships flying a flag of an EU Member State, accidents in European territorial seas and internal waters or wherever there are European interests involved, as reported by EU Member States in EMCIP.

Based on data provided by the accident investigation bodies of EU and EFTA member states, EMCIP is the main data source to analyse safety issues raised by marine casualties and incidents.

According to the report there were 74 fatalities and 754 persons injured in 2014, with 2,872 ships involved in incidents.

A total of 9, 180 incidents have been reported to the EMCIP over the last four years. During the period, more than 390 persons lost their lives and 3, 250 were injured, leading accident investigations bodies opened more than 530 investigations and published 410 reports.

The data available in EMCIP will be used for the improvement of maritime safety and the prevention of pollution by ships.
