Lower Austria Fire Brigade purchases new refuelling system for vehicles and helicopters

Published:  17 November, 2015

Mobile refuelling for helicopters and vehicles is now available to the fire Brigade in Lower Austria following the delivery of two 5,500-litre joint fuel systems by WEW. Westerwälder Eisenwerk in Germany is a company that provides specialist tank containers and swap tank solutions for transporting and storing liquids, gases and dry bulk.

Following extensive assessment and referrals from other WEW users, including the Austrian Army, the Lower Austria Fire Service Association ordered two systems, both of which have now been delivered and were demonstrated during KAT 15, the Fire Services Association open day.

The systems are self- sufficient, and are fitted with their own generator and a dual pump system. These systems are able to transport both diesel for the vehicles and Jet A1 for the helicopters.  The dual pump units are able to dispense from 10 l/m up to 150 l/m depending on the refuelling task.

The tanks have a hook lift bail bar fitted to the ISO frame to enable the units to be transported by a hook arm fitted vehicle.  This enables the tank to be transported to wherever it is required, be unloaded, without any additional lifting equipment, and within minutes be dispensing fuel whilst the vehicle is able to move off and carryout another task.  This capability makes the tanks fully ‘drop and go’.

‘Our ‘drop and go’ solutions are designed to get fuel to wherever it is needed as quickly as possible to keep fire brigades and other emergency services on the move when time is critical,’ said Dr Ulrich Bernhardt, chief executive of WEW.

The double shell tanks, which have been fully tested to ADR/RID approvals, require little or no ground preparation prior to unloading and when it is time to move them on there is no need to de-gas them nor is there a requirement for significant clearing up.
