A ground-breaking practical model for reducing firefighters’ exposure to chemical and biological substances is now available in English.

The Skellefteå Model is based on the Friska Brandmän project (‘Healthy Firefighters’), a wide-ranging project carried out by the Swedish Association of Firefighters together with the emergency service organisation Kommunal Räddningstjänsten and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions.

The purpose of the Healthy Firefighters Project is to influence attitudes, routines and methods to create a better and healthier work environment for firefighters.

Its focus is not on the types of hazards most commonly associated with fire fighting such as fire, explosive substances and the risk of falling or being injured by falling materials. Instead, it concentrated on reducing the chemical and biological substances that could have negative health effects. Such substances are difficult to detect and could occur from a fire or accident, during follow-up extinguishing; decontamination or the handling of contaminated materials such as clothing and equipment. Chemical substances can include carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen cyanide, acrolein or other aldehydes. Biological agents include bacteria, viruses and toxins as well as airborne fibres.

As part of the project a wide-ranging risk assessment was carried out by workers, union officials and management of the Skellefteå Fire Brigade in north Sweden. They analysed the tasks performed by firefighters and identified potential exposure situations. The work resulted in a comprehensive set of new routines and procedures at the fire brigade.

The latest publication aims to share the knowledge gained and the practical steps taken by the Skellefteå Fire Brigade as a result of the Healthy Firefighters project.

The free-to-download publication explains how potential contaminants are dealt with by Skellefteå Fire Brigade, for instance through innovative PPE cleaning, repair and maintenance routines, as well as new operating procedures during an incident.

The book has recently been translated into English and published by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency. Its authors are Stefan Magnusson, principal health and safety representative for the Skellefteå Fire & Rescue service and fire protection engineer David Hultman.
