Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service HQ replaces its gas suppression and detection system

Published:  12 May, 2015

When Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (UK) was tasked with replacing an ageing gas suppression fire detection and alarm system in its headquarters’ server and control rooms, it had to look for the most reliable and cost effective solution.

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service covers the areas of Bedford Borough Council, Central Bedfordshire Council and Luton Borough Council, protecting a growing population of more than 620,000 local residents. The service includes 14 strategically positioned fire stations to serve the local communities and respond to emergency calls, with the main headquarters located in Kempston, just south of the county town of Bedford.

Kempston-based company Fire Safety Services was approached by Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service to provide a solution for the old gas suppression system and selected a Gent by Honeywell Aspirating Smoke Detection (ASD) as the most suitable system.

Adam Gillespie, systems manager fire safety services for Gent, said: ‘The ASD system has the ability to detect fires at a very early stage, significantly faster than point or beam smoke detectors enabling a fast response to the first signs of smoke. This early detection is particularly vital to mission critical and high-risk applications and was ideal for the control and server rooms in this application.

‘The solution provides extremely reliable cover and was also the most cost effective option, as it is significantly cheaper than replacing the old system with a like-for-like gas suppression system.’

The early detection of the ASD system often works before visible smouldering takes place, before an open fire occurs and before intense smoke develops. It was designed as a cost effective solution for monitoring small to medium-sized spaces and equipment. The ASD system that was selected can be used to replace up to 8 point type smoke detectors with a pipe length of up to 50m to meet the EN54 part 20 requirements for Class A, B or C detection.

Adam Gillespie continued:  ‘The ASD will give them the required very early warning. The site is fully manned with a fire brigade next door, so they can react extremely quickly to any alerts on the system. The control room handles all of the 999 calls that come in from the surrounding area so it was vital to find the most robust solution possible.’
