Major ship fire tackled by multiple Cobra cutting extinguishers

Published:  15 December, 2014

TECHNOLOGY IN ACTION: Units from four different regional fire & rescue services attended to a major ship fire at the fishing harbour at Scheveningen, NL. Report from Stafbrandmeester Robin Jonkman of Amsterdam-Amstelland Brandweer.

Fire broke out on the large fishing trawler Johanna Maria (SCH118) on the 23rd of June 2014 during maintenance on one of the lower decks, it is thought as a result of welding operations.

Because the Regional Fire & Rescue Service Haaglanden didn’t have a large fireboat at its disposal, assistance was requested from the Port Authority of Rotterdam.  The specialist ship fire unit of the Regional Fire & Rescue Service Rotterdam-Rijnmond was also called in.

The fire could not be controlled despite the hard work of attending fire crews, who could not reach the seat of the fire due to the high temperatures and dense smoke.

Consequently, the incident commander requested the assistance of the Coldcut Cobra unit from the industrial fire service of Rotterdam.

By the first Cobra arrived, the fire had spread to the deck above the original fire. Two further Cobras were then requested from the Regional Fire & Rescue Service Amsterdam-Amstelland.

Two of the Cobras were deployed on the upper deck, while a third was deployed from an aerial platform. The conditions inside the trawler improved rapidly during the use of these three units. When the temperatures of fire gases inside the ship had dropped, and the fire gas had been inerted by the steam effect, the fire and rescue team could reach the seat of the fire and finally take control of the fire.

It took the crews over 12 hours to extinguish the fire. Cooling down the vessel took another 24 hours.
