Virtual training in the battle against Ebola

Published:  17 November, 2014

Crimedin, the research Center in Disaster and Emergency Medicine in Italy, has started the Dutch simulation software XVR to prepare medical professionals for deployment in Ebola treatment facilities, which Save the Children Foundation is currently building in Sierra Leone. Crimedin has incorporated virtual reality simulation in an Ebola pre-deployment induction course.

In the Ebola pre-deployment induction course, the virtual simulation software is used to run virtual reality training scenarios to help medical profession to:

  • Understand – and familiarize themselves with – the layout of the treatment facility;
  • Understand and exercise standard operating procedures.

Dr. Pierluigi Ingrassia from Crimedin explains: ‘The combination of virtual reality training with a live exercise in dressing and undressing with protective clothing is important to let the participants understand the importance of careful personal protection.’

Simulation training with XVR is also taking place in the Czech Republic where staff at Prague-based ambulance service Ambulans Meditrans is prepared to transport infectious patients under Biosafety level 4 conditions.
XVR developer E-Semble from the Netherlands is supporting the Save the Children Foundation by providing free XVR licenses for their Ebola preparedness training. E-Semble is working closely with its simulation Partner iNovaria from Italy to extend the initiative to a worldwide support program. Support and endorsement are requested from international (non) governmental organisations and aid providers to deploy 3D simulation Ebola preparedness training worldwide as soon as possible.

Providing adequate training for medical personnel is a key priority in the international response to the Ebola outbreak. The XVR virtual reality simulation platform is used by over 200 organisations in 28 to prepare incident responders for their challenging tasks. By making XVR available for Ebola preparedness training, E-Semble and iNovaria want to help increase the operational capabilities of medical personnel, and strengthen the international effort to battle Ebola.
