Fighting fires using positive pressure ventilation - guidance published

Published:  14 October, 2014

UK Department for Communities & Local Government and Chief Fire & Rescue Adviser release generic risk assessments.

The generic risk assessment examines the hazards, risks and control measures that relate to ventilation. It includes the use of positive pressure ventilation as either a defensive or offensive part of firefighting.

The guidance outlines significant hazards and risks associated with the use of PPV, such as uncontrolled spread of fire, worsening of internal conditions and noise. It outlines key control measures (eg command and control, communications, and PPE) as well as specific control measures to deal with uncontrolled fire spread, creating an outlet, and dealing with debris blown from the fan.
