New seminar and research project announced by the IWMA

Published:  07 October, 2014

International Water Mist Association (IWMA) has announced a new seminar called: Fire Protection with water mist. It will take place on November 20, in Lund, Sweden, at the Lund University. The event will be held in Swedish and the programme is out now and can be viewed on the IWMA homepage.

During the last IWMA member meeting - held on 15th October 2013 in Paris – the go ahead was given to start a new research project, called: Water mist – an alternate solution to sprinklers in building protection.

The scope of the project will be to assess test procedures and the relevant pass/fail criteria. This is to apply the performance verification of water mist systems using thermally activated (sprinkler like) nozzles for the protection of buildings according to the current status of knowledge. Another aim is also to come up with suggestions on how to develop this technology for the future.

The first stage of the project will be carried out by, IFAB, the Institute of Applied Fire Research, in Berlin, Germany. Its task is it to evaluate all existing test procedures, including its corresponding pass fail criteria –  and possibly create even new pass fail criteria.

As soon as this step is completed the results will be published on the IWMA webpage.

Further stages of this project will consist of the development of the most suitable pass fail criteria (step two) and eventually to carry out actual fire tests to support the work which has been done within step two.
