New Nomex 3DP fabric tested on DuPont Thermo-Man

Published:  01 October, 2014

DuPont recently put its new Nomex 3DP fabric to the test on DuPont Thermo-Man. Over 60 firefighters and industry professionals were invited to witness the results at an exclusive event on the site of TOTAL Bitumen in the industrial town of Brunsbüttel in Germany. Hosted in conjunction with the German association of safety engineers (VDSI), the event saw DuPont demonstrate the latest Nomex solutions and put each garment through its paces.

‘Testing highlighted the exceptional heat and flame protection and excellent mechanical strength provided by the newest fabric from DuPont, Nomex 3DP. Achieving zero percent burns after each flame engulfment test on DuPont Thermo-Man, Nomex 3DP presented market-leading results. Other garment solutions on the market typically present a burn rate of around 2%. Nomex 3DP also qualified for outstanding ATPV results of 18cal/cm2 against electric arc hazards, said Jürgen Klotz, Sales Manager Nomex Emergency Response Western Europe.

Professional, industrial and voluntary firefighting units as well as industrial safety officers were provided with a combination of practical and theoretical information at sessions led by DuPont experts. The content covered trends in thermal and flame protection equipment, legal standards and requirements, as well as current Nomex fibre and fabric solutions. Practical testing sessions were also held using the industry standard eight-second flame impingement test on DuPont Thermo-Man. This life-size mannequin system is equipped with 122 thermal sensors and offers the most advanced thermal burn injury evaluation in the world.

Attendees were invited to bring their own personal protective equipment (PPE) to be tested on Thermo-Man. Steve Marnach, Sales Manager Nomex Industrial Apparel Western Europe, said: ‘In total, we tested six protective garments made from Nomex which were between 18 and seven years old. When testing these garments on Thermo-Man the results were just as good as those recorded for completely new garments. This clearly demonstrates the quality and durability of Nomex. The garments also recorded 18% second and third degree burns, significantly lower than flame-retardant cotton which is around 70% on a flame test of 4 seconds.’

Jürgen Klotz said: ‘We continuously strive to make PPE for firefighters and industrial workers even safer and our new fabric, Nomex 3DP sets new standards for the firefighting industry. The test on Thermo-Man confirmed this. We were able to remove the Nomex 3DP garment from our test mannequin to reveal zero percent burns.’

Flux Technology, patented by DuPont, achieves this improvement in outershell fabric performance. This comprises of two layers of fabric woven together, with an inner layer of DuPont Kevlar and an outer layer of DuPont Nomex. Each layer has a different thermal shrinkage pattern and reacts differently to heat flux. When the outer layer of DuPont Nomex is hit by heat, the fibre reacts and thickens. This increases the insulation barrier between the wearer and heat or flame hazard they are faced with. The inner layer of DuPont Kevlar offers high mechanical strength, holding the garment together, providing three-dimensional protection and giving extra seconds of wearer safety.
