Identification and detection of trace explosives in the field

Published:  19 September, 2014

908 Devices awarded $2.6 million in growth funding for high pressure mass spectrometry tool.

The pioneer in purpose-built analytical devices for chemical analysis received the funding from the US government’s Technical Support Working Group (TSWG).

This multi-year award covers development and testing of a handheld device that leverages 908 Devices’ patented High Pressure Mass Spectrometry (HPMS), which also powers the flagship M908TM device. The focus is to achieve even higher levels of selectivity and sensitivity with HPMS for field identification and detection of trace explosives.

HPMS enhancements engineered under this effort will increase the capability to identify an even broader target list of explosives and precursor materials at trace levels with the same speed, fidelity and confidence achieved today.  All advancements under this program will be immediately realised by the commercially available M908 device and future complementary products.

“The opportunity to collaborate with TSWG stakeholders across federal, state and local agencies enables us to better address user needs and expand applications of our HPMS technology,” says Dr. Kevin Knopp, co-founder and CEO of 908 Devices.   “Our HPMS technology platform is the cornerstone of 908 Devices’ products.  It is our ambition to progressively improve performance capabilities for current and future products.”

M908 is the first product line engineered by 908 Devices providing civilian users, first responders and military teams with unique capabilities for material analysis. Weighing in at just 4.4 pounds, the portable device is battery powered and designed for effortless operation in full personal protective equipment (PPE). An expandable threat list enables M908 to adapt with each mission and serve as a truly proactive performance tool in the hot zone.

Prior to the introduction of M908, the powerful capabilities of mass spec were primarily limited to the laboratory because of cumbersome size and weight, fragility and complex machinery requiring highly trained experts.  908 Devices’ development of patented HPMS technology enables M908 to operate in the field with unprecedented levels of selectivity and sensitivity. This groundbreaking technology was recently awarded The 2013 Analytical Scientist Innovation Award, which recognizes the best technological advances of analytical sciences each year and received the Instrument Business Outlook's 2014 Gold Award for portable analytical instrument industrial design. M908 was selected for its innovative industrial design that clearly distinguishes the device by creating an appealing visual appearance and enhanced end-user experience.
