Official opening of LNG training facility

Published:  16 September, 2014

Falck Risc to open its new LNG training centre at the Maasvlakte in the Netherlands.

The Maasvlakte is part of Europoort, a harbour and industrial area near the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands containing the biggest bulk terminal in western Europe as well as container terminals, distribution centres and a power plant.

Anticipating the fast growing demand for dealing with LNG incidents in the area, Dutch company Falck Risc decided to build a purpose-built training environment in Maasvlakte.

Both the Port of Rotterdam Authority and the Unified Fire & Rescue Service Rotterdam were extensively consulted regarding their requirements and, since May 2014, the facility has been intensively used for pilot training. According to an experienced HAZMAT fire officer who attended an open day, ‘the full scale testing has given valuable new insights and a tremendously different view of the real behaviour of LNG dispersions’.

The last construction phase was due for completion ahead of the official opening on Friday 19 September 2014. At the beginning of September the facility received an LNG storage tank, enabling Falck Risc to be even more flexible in the training it can offer.

The company has already won a tender for providing LNG emergency response guidelines for inland water transport for The Rhine Port Group. Together with Falck UK (RPI Frontline) and the Unified Fire & Rescue Services, Rotterdam are developing incident response scenarios for small scale LNG and guidelines for incident preparedness, education and training on incident response LNG.
