FDNY training academy reopens following outbreak of MRSA

Published:  10 September, 2014

The academy closed following the hospitalisation of several probationary firefighters.

The problem surfaced in early August when students were pulled from the Probationary Firefighter's School after the first case of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) was reported.

The Probationary Firefighter's School, located at The FDNY Fire Academy on Randall's Island, is charged with the training of new recruits (AKA Probys) of the FDNY who will eventually be protecting the lives and property of the citizens and visitors of The City of New York.

FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro ordered the School to close and undergo a full cleaning focusing on high-risk areas including locker rooms, bathrooms and the auditorium.

The reopening came as fire officials revealed that several probationary firefighters had been hospitalised after contracting the disease. Although the exact number of affected firefightes is unavailable, there is speculation that possible and confirmed cases have risen to 22.

As well as a full decontamination process in the Academy's buildings and changing rooms, there was also a decontamination process for all of the personal protective ensembles used by the more than 300 probationary firefighters. This process was carried out by Minerva Bunker Gear Cleaners.

The disinfection of the gear was achieved with the use of a proprietary EPA-registered fabric sanitizer developed by Defensive Solutions Corp. Fire Soaps Fabric Sanitizer has been proven to eliminate 99.9% of infectious bacteria while eliminating odour-causing bacteria.
