Tall Building Fire Safety Conference to become an annual forum

Over 100 delegates attended the 2nd International Tall Building Fire Safety Network Conference (TBFSN) – held on June 17-20 - at the University of Greenwich, in London. 

The TBFSN exists to share best practice in the management of fire risk in tall buildings. Chair of the Conference, Paul Coster of Canary Wharf Management, welcomed an audience comprising fire academics, insurance engineers, building owners, firefighters, fire engineers and facilities management delegates.The conference included several papers and presentations and was opened by London Fire Commissioner, Ron Dobson. The subsequent days were opened by Graham Ellicot (CEO, FIA) and Wilf Butcher (CEO, ASFP).

Keynote presentations came from Jake Pauls (Canada) on ‘Situational awareness in tall building evacuations’, Prof. Ed Galea (UK) presented his presentation ‘High–rise building evacuations post 911’ and James Colgate (US) related to his research called ‘Tall building fire safety issues in New York’.

Delegates attended from the following countries; Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Holland, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Sweden, US, and the UK. Subjects discussed and debated at the conference were external fire spread on tall buildings, life safety systems, firefighter responses, tall timber frame construction, use of lifts/elevators for evacuation, and mixed ability evacuation; The delegates also enjoyed a gala dinner in the Painted Hall at Greenwich. Commenting on the conference, Russ Timpson said: ‘We are really pleased that the event has received such high praise. There is such an appetite to make this an annual event to provide a forum for debate as the proliferation of tall buildings increases worldwide.’

Confirmed dates for the 2015 Tall Building conferences in London (June 2015) and Chicago (Sept 2015) will be confirmed shortly. A call for papers, presentations, exhibitors and sponsors has been announced. Anyone interested should contact Russ Timpson (russ.timpson@horizonscanbcp.com).
