FireDos breaks into the market

Published:  28 March, 2014

The news is out – there is a new manufacturer of monitors in the fire fighting market.

German company FireDos, widely known for its engineering expertise in the construction of foam proportioners, is in the process of launching a complete range of monitors over the coming months.

Six different sizes will be available, ranging from a performance of 2,500 l/m (the so-called M2) to a very respectable 50,000 l/m (the M12) – this ‘big gun’ will be ready for inspection in 2014.

That means the complete product range of FireDos monitors will be displayed at the Interschutz 2015 exhibition (Hanover, 8-13 June).

A range of actuators, nozzles and pipes have been specifically designed for the new family of monitors. Customers can choose between levers, hand wheels, DC actuators (so the monitor can be used on trucks) and AC actuators (with integrated electronics). Also available is a range of multi-purpose nozzles (adjustable/with internal dry chemical) and foam pipes (straight/adjustable and with/without deflectors).

So what makes the new monitors special? We put this question to FireDos’ Sales Manager, Ingo Weiss. ‘We have come up with a unique flat oval design for the waterway of the monitor. These sections are made of heavy-duty cast aluminium or, alternatively, bronze. We have also optimised the inner walls of the waterway to redirect the water so as to achieve maximum flow whilst reducing turbulence. The result is more throw height and throw range with less pressure.’

As an example Ingo points out that the M4, flowing at 6,000 l/m, has a 100-metre reach and has an impressive footprint of 85% of the water reaching the target.

Another feature of the range is that all waterway components direct the flow upwards, which means the units are self-draining after use.

So why did FireDos, a manufacturer of foam proportioners, decide to begin making monitors?

‘The answer is that we heard of a changed market situation in the field of high-end monitors. Customers using our FireDos proportioners had even been asking us repeatedly if we could make any products available in this range. We then quickly decided to face this challenge, which we regard as an excellent addition to our existing product. At the same time, we were lucky enough to employ a number of highly experienced monitor specialists, who have been working with us since then.

‘It was our goal to create a completely new generation of monitors – our new colleagues are well aware of the users’ demands from their decades-long experience.

‘Previously our expertise was on the mechanical side but now we have been able to set up a new department looking after the electrical and control parts, so we can offer everything from one site,’ said Ingo.

The company aims to market its products to the oil and gas industry, in particular storage tank farms and offshore platforms. ‘However, we are in contact with truck manufacturers as well that have special requirements, for example for ARFF applications. They are particularly interested in the throwing height of our monitors,’ explained Ingo.

The monitors are already receiving a warm welcome to the extent that even before their development had been finalised FireDos had already received first orders for various fields of applications.

During the following months FireDos will be developing wired and remote control operation capability for the new monitors, to enable safe operation from safe areas. ‘The control aspect is unique for each customer, so we will also be developing automatic controls which means that when a thermal imaging camera detects a fire – for example in a waste management centre – the monitor will activate and automatically direct the flow to that spot,’ concluded Ingo Weiss.
