IFJ reviews some of the best industrial training establishments offering a wide variety of courses, programmes and simulator scenarios.
Texas Engineering Extension Service
The Texas Engineering Extension Service is probably the most famous Fire Training School in the world and for good reason. On a yearly basis over 50,000 firefighters from over 40 countries come to use the facilities at the Brayton Fire Training field.
TEEX is the proud owner of the largest training facility in the world and it boasts 132 training stations and 22 live-fuelled fire simulators.
The multi-levelled chemical complex simulates a chemical plant and students learn the techniques and coordination necessary when using more than one type of extinguishing agent on multi-level chemical structural fires.
In addition, the TEEX offers an industrial process unit where emergencies in refineries or chemical plants are simulated. This involves the burning of liquid hydrocarbons and propane to create an intense ground fire, a simulated line rupture and a series of fires in and around process pumps and equipment.
The piperack simulator uses a flammable liquid containment and an elevated walking platform to simulate a typical refinery, chemical process unit or loading/rack terminal operation.
The 72-foot fuselage prop for aircraft rescue and firefighting features first-class and coach sections, bi-level wings, a tail section and cockpit for integrated fire suppression and rescue drills. At 5,400 square feet, this ARFF prop also offers the largest training pit fire in the country and can be expanded to 8,400 square feet, which is said to be ideal for training in spill areas, wheel/brake assembly fires and fuselage rescue scenarios.
Apart from a marine facility, the establishment offers a pump alley, aerial cooler, a loading terminal, a rail car loading terminal and rack, a tank and dike, facilities and three facilities for interior firefighting.
TEEX offers courses to industrial fire brigades - it provides personnel from around the world with the strategies, tactics and skills needed to safely prevent and control emergencies at plants where flammable substances could endanger lives, facilities and surrounding communities.
Courses offered include exterior and interior fire brigade, incident command, bulk storage emergency management, firefighting for coal utilities, emergency operations center and incident safety officer.
