NEW Cordless smoke generator for training

Published:  03 February, 2014

Training specialist Haagen unveils the latest member of its family of smoke generators – the portable Vico.

The new cordless smoke generator has obviously been designed for firefighters. It can be operated with one (gloved) hand and heat-up time is only one/two seconds at the touch of a button, after which it starts producing smoke – and at what a rate.

The Vico produces up to 150m3 of smoke per minute for up to 20 minutes continuously, or even longer if operated in bursts. And the trainer is not only in control of the bursts of smoke but also the density of that smoke.

Control is at the centre of the Vico, to the extent that a trainer can control the generator at a distance using an optional remote control (wired or wireless). A WiFi module can also be used to control the smoke via a laptop, tablet, or even smartphone.

Portability

The 8kg smoke generator is powered by a battery that quickly heats up special smoke fluid. The high-power lithium battery will last for 20 mins in continuous use and can easily be swapped for longer training sessions. An optional power supply unit is also available with a 2.5m-long lead (220 V).

Wired remote control is also available for operating the unit from a distance (cable length 5 metres), and wireless remote control is possible at an unobstructed range of around 30m.

Training scenarios

The only limit is your imagination but here are some ideas from Haagen:

  • Exercises with vehicles: place the VICO in hidden spaces and vehicles for realistic practice situations with simulated fire or entrapment in vessels and vehicles.
  • Rescue and evacuation drills with smoke: fill various rooms with smoke and teach trainees to locate and evacuate victims in poor visibility conditions.
  • Fill several rooms with smoke (or add extra smoke): quickly fill locations with dense smoke for rescue exercises. Easily add extra smoke to additional rooms or floors at any time.
  • Add realism to maritime and aviation training: create a no-visibility environment in seconds in which trainees learn what it’s like to wear a mask.
  • Training in confined spaces and/or areas without power: create scenarios for firefighter training in areas without electricity, outdoors or at locations where large amounts of smoke are not an option.
  • Train recognition and response to potential danger: simulate a hazardous or emergency situation and teach trainees to recognise danger and how to respond in specific situations.
