German fire brigade training adopts semi inflatable rescue boat from Survitec

Published:  17 December, 2013

The German fire brigade has selected a 5.1m class semi rigid inflatable rescue boat from Survitec Group for use at its firefighter training school in Kassel, central Germany. Supplied with a complete trailer system, the boat can be easily towed behind a brigade vehicle. The boat will be used primarily for training on rivers and lakes but, if required, it is ready to be deployed in a real life emergency.

With its semi rigid construction, the DSB branded rescue boat is tremendously strong, durable and safe. Easy to manoeuvre on rivers and lakes, sea, as well as beaches and on dry land, it is well suited to inland water rescue operations. The solid aluminium hull can withstand knocks from floating debris and underwater objects and it will continue to float and perform even if the inflatable tubes are punctured. This is especially important in flood and rescue situations.

Based on a SOLAS rescue boat platform, the training school RIB has been modified to feature a central steering console with two seats side-by-side that is built around an integral stowage compartment.  This twin-seat arrangement allows the trainee helmsman and instructor to work together while still ensuring there is plenty of open space for other trainees to practice rope handling, towing and rescue manoeuvres. In total the boat can carry a maximum of 13 people.

Survitec Group won the contract from the German fire brigade after a very competitive public tender process. Axel Schuen, Survitec Group's Director of Boats, said the robust design of the DSB 5.1m class rescue boat makes it an ideal product for water rescue training activities. Powered by a single 50HP outboard, it can achieve speeds of approximately 30 knots.

Axel said: ‘This is a very strong and robust boat that will last many years. It has been equipped to the mandatory EN specifications for a fire brigade rescue boat so it has the required stowage arrangements and the appropriate safety and rescue equipment, first aid supplies, anchors and navigation equipment. While it will mainly be used on the rivers and lakes near Kassel, it is ready to be deployed in an emergency. The trailer system is easy to use so the boat can be quickly deployed wherever it is needed.’

Survitec's DSB brand is renowned the world over for its sturdiness of design and long product life. Its semi-rigid boats feature reinforced Hypalon seams and a Hypalon fender tube that is UV and abrasion resistant. The aluminium sandwich hull is crack resistant and self-drains to provide additional buoyancy. All the products are manufactured at Survitec's factory in Eschershausen, Germany. All RIBs undergo stringent quality and performance checks before, during and after manufacture.
