16 firefighters injured, 3,000 residents evacuated.

The explosion happened at around 4.20am on Saturday 28 September on the premises of Hoffmann Gastrans GmbH in Harthausen, Rhineland-Palatinate.

First on the scene were firefighters from Dudenhofen with support from neighbouring firefighters from Speyer, Ludwigshafen and BASF's own Fire Brigade. A total of 450 fire, rescue and police personnel were in attendance.

On arrival of the first fire engine two gas tankers exploded which lead to the injuring of 16 firefighters – seven of them severely so. The blast of the explosion was heard up to 30 kilometres away in the cities of Ludwigshafen and Mannheim.

Due to a risk of further explosions 3000 residents were evacuated, and police officers drove through the town with loudspeakers to inform residents about the evacuation. For residents who could not stay with relatives or friends , a shelter in a hall in the neighbouring town of Dudenhofen was established.
