The final definitive version of the position paper by Dr. Jimmy Seow, Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC), Western Australian State Government, Perth, on "Perfluorochemicals in Fire Fighting Foam" previously presented at the 5th Reebok Foam Seminar in March 2013, is now freely available for download as a PDF file.

This position paper discusses the current issues regarding the use of fire fighting foams containing perfluorochemicals and of fluorine-free foams now commercially available on the market.

The paper’s aim is to highlight and discuss:

Environmental and human health issues associated with the use of perfluorochemicals in fire fighting foams;

Current legislation and policy in Australia and overseas (namely the US, UK, Norway, Germany and the EU) pertaining to the use of perfluorochemicals in fire fighting foams;

Environmental acceptance criteria for the use of fire fighting foams;

Recommendations for the use of fire fighting foams containing fluorochemicals and fluorine-free foams in Western Australia for the Department of Environment and Conservation to consider or adopt as its policy.

The paper was presented at the 5th International Fire Fighting Foam Conference that took place in March 2013 in Reebok Stadium, Bolton, UK.
