Metro Chiefs Association meets in Phoenix and appoints new board members and officers

The Metropolitan “Metro” Fire Chiefs Association, a section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) held its 2013 annual conference in Phoenix, Arizona, April 5-11. Approximately 110 Metro chiefs from Canada, China, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States attended the conference and elected the section’s 2013-2014 officers and board members. Chief Bob Khan and the Phoenix Fire Department staff hosted the conference.

The new officers are:

  • Chief G. Keith Bryant of the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Fire Department, president;
  • Chief Larry Few of the Fulton County, Georgia, Fire and Rescue Department, vice president;
  • Chief Ken Block of the Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Fire and Rescue Services, secretary; and,
  • Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr of the Austin, Texas, Fire Department, treasurer.

The new board members are:

  • Chief Michael Grant of the New Haven, Connecticut, Fire Department, board member;
  • Chief (retired) William “Bill” Stewart of the Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Fire Services, senior board member;
  • Chief Ivor Brooks of the Birmingham, Alabama, Fire and Rescue Services Department, alternate board member; and,
  • Chief Stephen Dean of the Mobile, Alabama, Fire-Rescue Department, immediate past president.

The Metro Chiefs bestowed the following 2013 Metro Awards:

  • Chief Keith Richter, of the Orange County, California, Fire Authority was named Fire Chief of the Year;
  • Chief Peter Holland, Chief Fire and Rescue Adviser, UK Government, received the Lifetime Achievement Award; and,
  • Vicki Lee, Program Manager, International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC); Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell, Assistant to the General President of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF); and Dr. Denis Onieal, Superintendent of the National Fire Academy received the President’s Award of Distinction.

USFA Administrator Ernie Mitchell; NFPA President and CEO, Jim Shannon; IAFC President and Chairman of the Board Hank Clemmensen; IAFC Executive Director and CEO Mark Light; International Association of Fire Fighters General President Harold Schaitberger; Chief Vij Randeniya, president of the Chief Fire Officers Association of the United Kingdom; and Tore Eriksson, president of the International Fire and Rescue Services addressed the chiefs. Kansas City, Missouri, Chief (retired) Richard “Smokey” Dyer delivered the keynote address.

A comprehensive education program included an update on the national drug shortage, an overview of the National Fallen Fire Fighters behavioral health and vulnerability study, a presentation on social media, as well as progress reports from the First Responder Network Authority Board (FirstNet), Underwriters Laboratories, and much more. In addition, Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell and Jason Averill gave the inaugural presentation of the just completed NIST report on high-rise fireground field experiments, which was followed by a national press event.

The 2014 Metro conference will be hosted by Chief Jim Clack and the Baltimore Fire Department, Baltimore, Maryland, May 31-June 5 at the Marriott Inner Harbor at Camden Yards.

The Metropolitan Fire Chiefs (Metro) Association brings together fire chiefs from large metropolitan fire departments to share information and focus on major issues effecting policy changes in the U.S. and abroad. Its members belong to the IAFC and NFPA and are the fire chiefs of jurisdictions with minimum staffing of 350 fully paid career firefighters.
