Draeger Safety UK is awarded major BA contract

Published:  08 April, 2013

Draeger Safety UK will supply breathing apparatus (BA) and associated equipment to both Northamptonshire (NFRS) and Buckinghamshire (BFRS) Fire and Rescue Services.

Fully covered by Dräger’s Total Care servicing package, the innovative equipment has now been delivered into the services and training for BFRS staff members commenced recently, with the full roll out of BA equipment due to launch at BFRS this month, whilst equipment has been live at NFRS since last October.

Following a highly successful collaborative BA procurement project between both NFRS and BFRS, during which a dedicated project team was commissioned to identify a suitable replacement for the current, near end-of-life equipment, the rigorous selection process saw Dräger awarded the contract to supply BA sets (telemetry enabled for NFRS), cylinders (nine litre, 300 bar) enhanced BA communications, telemetry entry control boards (NFRS) and a range of ancillary equipment.

BA Project Manager, Garry Brown, from Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: ‘As fire services whose current BA provision was nearing the end of its operational life, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire jointly tendered, evaluated and subsequently awarded the BA contract to Dräger following a diligent and rigorous selection process.

‘The four BA manufacturers were provided with a comprehensive tender document on which to base their submissions and both companies that progressed to the next phases were fully involved in the entire process. Whilst the evaluation revealed that the basic functionality of each manufacturer performed well and operated to a very high standard, across the full range of the evaluation it became clear that, to deliver best value and provide significant improvements to fire fighter safety, the effectiveness and reliability of these systems had to be the deciding factor. Overall, and across the full range of criteria evaluated, including service support and total care packages, Dräger scored the highest.’

Speaking about the success of the project, Garry continued: ‘Delivering this large safety critical project above specification, below budget and within the timeframes set has been a significant achievement for all involved and this is testament to the hard work and dedication of the project team.’

Phil Saxton, Sales and Marketing Director, at Draeger Safety UK, said: ‘We are delighted to have been awarded this prestigious contract to supply Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire fire services with breathing apparatus and associated equipment. Dräger is absolutely committed to the safety of all fire service professionals and we are now working closely with both services to ensure the smooth transition of the new equipment. We look forward to a long and successful partnership with both services.’

The replacement equipment consists of 155 Dräger PSS 7000 Breathing Apparatus sets and FPS 7000 Face Masks and new ancillary equipment including retractable personal lines. All sets have voice amplification and half of the new sets have integral radio communications. Additionally the Bodyguard system offers more reliable data and real time information to crews. The second phase of the roll out, currently planned for 2014-15, will introduce Dräger Merlin PSS Telemetry systems bringing real-time monitoring to the fore and helping to revolutionise communications as well as entry control procedures.

GM Dave Norris, BA Programme Manager at Buckinghamshire FRS said: ‘Around 19 out of the last 21 SCBA contracts have been awarded to Dräger, demonstrating that the company is developing a significant relationship with UK fire and rescue services. I am confident that the Dräger system offers the highest level of protection and functionality to our staff. Additionally I am delighted at the success of the collaborative work with Northants and look forward to extending this into other areas of procurement and operation. All sides recognise the joint commitment to ensuring the highest quality product is provided for our operational staff, and we welcome the commitment by Dräger to invest further in innovative areas of protective equipment for the Fire and Rescue Service.

‘This procurement represents a significant capital investment on behalf of both Fire Authorities at a time when services are faced with difficult and challenging budgetary decisions. This demonstrates a major commitment from the service by delivering the best equipment currently available. I believe that this new equipment will provide a wide range of operational benefits and clearly contributes to our service priorities. It has been very satisfying to work on a project which will deliver such a high quality product. Ultimately, this will lead to a number of key improvements to both firefighter and community safety.’
