European Aviation Safety Agency visits UK’s International Fire Training Centre

Published:  16 May, 2012

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), the European Union’s centrepiece organisation for the promotion and delivery of aviation safety recently visited the International Fire Training Centre (IFTC) at its Teesside operation.

The team from EASA wanted to understand how aviation firefighter training is delivered in the UK and selected the IFTC as the showcase venue for this element of their fact-finding programme.

Over a two-day period, the EASA specialists observed firefighter initial training in the classroom and then assessed the practical training on the fire ground as groups of students were put through their paces on the fire screen and on a CAT 10 simulator, the only one of its kind in the UK.

EASA also visited IFTC’s sister company, the Cabinet Office’s Emergency Planning College (EPC) in North Yorkshire. There they were led through the EPC’s capability in emergency planning and resilience exercising for aerodromes.

Predrag Sekulić from EASA said of the visit: “It was important for our visit that we saw a wide range of training and facilities. We came to the IFTC because of its role as a diverse fire ground in UK and during our visit, we gained  a much clearer view of how the IFTC operates and the issues the organisation faces.”

The team was hosted by IFTC’s aviation specialist, Training Director Dennis Perkins who commented: “It was great to work with the EASA delegation as they look to understand how the International Fire Training Centre teams with the CAA to deliver training across all categories.”
