Fire safety experts stage EC transport event

Published:  27 February, 2012

Major European mass transit initiative to develop new approaches in fire safety engineering nears completion.

Staged by Exova Warringtonfire and BRE Global, the TRANSFEU project event brings together some of the most eminent fire safety experts in surface transport in Europe. A UK seminar and workshop will be held at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) in Manchester on Wednesday, June 20th.

The European Commission (EC) project comprises 21 partners from 10 European countries including five train operators, four train builders and 12 fire laboratories.

The main goal of TRANSFEU is to develop a holistic approach to fire safety engineering to support consistency of standards in European surface transport requirements in the railway, road and marine sectors.

Phil Hinde of Crossrail will set the scene and make the welcome speech, with key speakers including Heinz Reimann of Bombardier Transportation (Switzerland), Richard Nowell of the Rail Safety and Standards Board, Jonathan Assael of the Maritime Coastguard Agency, Beth Dean and Peter Briggs of Exova Warringtonfire and David Crowder of BRE Global .

Peter Briggs, project manager for Exova Warringtonfire, said: “The TRANSFEU project is a major opportunity to develop the way we use fire safety engineering in surface transport, and it brings together fire and industry experts in Europe.”

A key objective of TRANSFEU is to develop a new smoke chamber/FTIR measurement tool for classifying the toxicity of gases for EN 45545 Part 2 and to determine safety for passengers and crew in the event of a fire on board.

The UK seminar and workshop will allow those attending to become familiar with the present and future regulatory situations affecting surface transport and how fire safety engineering principles can contribute to the design, development and production of improved passenger vehicles.

Support for the project is also provided by IMO in the marine sector and by UNIFE for the railway industry.

The UK TRANSFEU seminar and workshop will be held at the Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester, on Wednesday, June 20th.
