Sicur sets standards for Southern Europe

Published:  11 April, 2008

Sicur ‘08 took place in the impressive Feria de Madrid in Spain,  26-29 February.
IFJ couldn’t resist visiting the Spanish capital to check out the latest developments in a show that is beginning to feel truly international.

Newly world-patented technology Lumicone was on show by Hispamast, the Spain/Portugal/South America partner of Italian manufacturer Fireco.

On Hispamast’s stand was a lighting balloon mounted on a telescopic mast that allows firefighters to get the best of both worlds. Hispamast Ivan Mayoral explained; “Previously lighting balloons had to be taken out of a box, put together and then erected – a process that took up valuable time. The benefit of this system is immediate. At the touch of a button the mast goes up and the balloon assembles itself.” Lighting balloons, emphasised Ivan, are fast becoming a favourite of firefighters because they illuminate an entire area without heavy shadows.

Firefighters in Lyon are the first to use the Lumicone system but elsewhere a following is also growing. “It has even been adapted slightly for German firefighters who are very aware of health and safety issues. In German fire appliances the mast will not erect itself until the handbreak on the vehicle has been deployed. Similarly, when the hand break is taken off, the telescopic mast goes down automatically.”

First-time exhibitor Cold Cut System AB started doing business in Spain in September last year – explained CCS Training Co-ordinator Lars Lundmark – and so far the signs are good.
In fact, at Sicur the reception of the Cobra was far above expectation. “The firefighters watched our video and said that Cobra was impressive. Some were already aware of it, of course.”

For those not acquainted with Cobra, it is a high pressure, single operator water jet that produces one-micron-sized water droplets with a special abrasive capable of cutting through any building material (including steel) in seconds.

CCS Cobra is increasing its world penetration and last year the company won a contract for 130 units in Malaysia – making it the biggest market for the company after Norway and Sweden.

On another stand Ignacio Garcia, Export Manager at Spanish PPE boot manufacturer Fal Seguridad, presented the new lace-free fastening BOA system, a true innovation in the field of firefighting PPE.

Hailed by the company as the boot for the 21st century, the BOA system does not use laces or zips to secure the foot. Rather it uses a steel cable (made with 49-wire, aircraft grade, stainless steel wire) and a reel. When the reel is rotated, the “lace” is wound onto the spool and pulls the boot round the foot much quicker than traditional methods, saving precious time during that vital call-out. “It’s possible to get a perfect fit/adjustment and it avoids risks of getting snagged for instance during wildland exercises.” Ignacio adds that wearing different thickness socks isn’t a problem either, because the BOA system can be adjusted extremely quickly and precisely. The system has been patented and although Europe will be the first area to be offered the product, Ignacio is now looking to test the boots to NFPA standards.

Damian Jordi of Kidde Fire Trainers was on the Hermes Ingenieros stand, which is one of Kidde Fire Trainers’ partners in Spain. Kidde Fire Trainers installs manual/automatic (propane and natural gas-fueled) life fire training systems that are environmentally friendly. One such system was recently installed in the National Academy of Civil Protection (Madrid) with technology from Kidde Fire Trainers.

Damian commented, “Spain is a growing market for us and we are currently actively involved in a number of major projects. Spain might be less evolved than central Europe but there is a growing awareness as regards the installation of these types of infrastructures. Every year we have more enquiries.”
