The German Fire Protection Association’s latest publication evaluates the history of fire in 70 countries
Published: 05 October, 2011
Humanity and Fires by Prof Dr NN Bruschlinsky, Prof Dr SV Sokolov and Dr Ing P Wagner is available for 25 euros (plus post and packaging).
The new publication covers:
- – Problems of fire safety in the world at the end of the 20th century
- – Fire risks
- – The history of fire risks in the countries of the world
- – Humanity and fires
The study is the fruit of 20 years’ labour by the authors, and it initially came about as a response to an inspiring article by Harvard University Professon H Emmons, ‘The Further History of Fire Science’, published in the 1980s.
Professor H Emmons had predicted that future scientific and technological innovation in fire fighting would guarantee people living in the 23rd century ‘almost fire-free living’. The authors decided to try and analyse the hypothesis by creating a database of world fire statistics for research; building a theory of integral fire risk and fire-fighting services; and consulting with world experts to gain a better understanding of the impact of geophysical and climate conditions on fire hazards.
The publication concludes that mankind cannot be guaranteed fire-free living in the foreseeable future.
