ETANKFIRE workshop dates announced for the USA

Published:  12 September, 2011

The planned workshop will take place 1st November in Kansas City.

At the initiative of SP Fire Technology and the Swedish Petroleum Institute (SPI), a research project on ethanol tank fire fighting is being proposed – ETANKFIRE Ethanol Tank Fire Fighting.

The goal of this project is to develop and validate a methodology for fire protection and suppression of tanks containing ethanol fuels and to determine the large scale burning behavior of ethanol fuels.

Handling and storage of ethanol has been increasing dramatically in recent years, not only in Sweden but also in Europe, the US, and in South America. However, knowledge and experience of ethanol fire behavior and suppression is very limited, in particular regarding response to storage tank fires.

SP Fire Technology and the Swedish Petroleum Institute are in the planning stage of this project with the aim of finding stakeholders that would be interested in participating and funding the project.

As part of this process, a workshop will be held in Kansas City on the 1st November and will be open for potential stakeholders from the oil and ethanol industry, fire protection system providers, first responders, regulators, and other interested parties to participate.

A description of the technical content of the project will be presented and opened for discussion.

After that, workshop participants will establish the project structure, rules for participation as a funding member, and the next steps needed to launch the first phase of the project.

The workshop is hosted by SP and will take place at the Hyatt Place Kansas City Airport.

The workshop is FREE of charge, but all delegates are responsible for their own travel and accommodation.

The number of participants will be limited to 50 so please register as soon as possible to guarantee your attendance.
