City of Mesa orders four Pierce Manufacturing Quantum aerial platforms

Published:  16 August, 2011

Pierce Manufacturing, an Oshkosh Corporation company, has announced that it has received an order for three Quantum pumper vehicles and one Quantum aerial platform from the Mesa Fire Department in Mesa, Ariz. The Mesa Fire Department’s front line apparatus fleet will grow to include 33 Quantum pumpers and five Quantum aerials. The vehicles will be delivered beginning in January 2012.

“Since its introduction, the innovative Quantum chassis has proven itself as an excellent choice for room, visibility, and ride quality – so much so that departments have chosen to standardize their fleets around its capabilities,” said Jim Johnson, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president, Fire & Emergency. “It’s a great honour when we see the Quantum continue to grow with fine organizations like the Mesa Fire Department.”

“I write the specs together with our apparatus committee, and we look for a happy medium that will benefit both the firefighters and the maintenance department,” said Mesa Fire Maintenance Resource Superintendent, Larry LaBarbera. “Firefighters love the Quantum for the room inside, the automatic drop down folding steps, and the excellent visibility. And, our maintenance team likes the quality and durability. It’s just a great truck and it hangs together – a user friendly vehicle for the guys out in the field and for my mechanics.”

The Mesa Fire Department utilizes a standard replacement schedule that calls for new vehicles every 8-10 years, or 130,000 miles. The department then rotates the units into reserve status for 3-5 years, or 150,000 miles.

Each of the Quantum pumpers is equipped with a 500 hp EPA 2010 certified engine, TAK-4 independent front suspension, 19-inch front bumper extension, seating for six firefighters, frontal impact and side roll protection systems, Husky 12 foam system, Hercules CAF system, 1500 gpm single stage bronze pump, 1000 gpm monitor with electric remote control, hydraulic ladder rack and Command Zone advanced electronics.

The Quantum 85-foot aerial platform features a 2000-gpm single stage bronze pump, twin electric monitors, 250-gallon water tank, Husky 12 foam system, 430-amp alternator, a 16-foot stabilizer spread with 12-inches of ground penetration, TAK-4 independent front suspension and air ride rear suspension, slide out adjustable trays, swing-out toolboard, storage for seven air bottles in fenders, telescoping tripod lights, breathing air to the tip, and LED lighting along the aerial device.

The city of Mesa is the 40th largest city in the United States. Mesa Fire Department was formed in 1897 and covers a protection district of 132 square miles with a population of 468,012. In 2010, the department handled more than 55,000 runs out of 18 fire stations.
