Scotland's eight fire and rescue services have become the first in the UK to begin operating a new state-of-the-art digital communication system. Airwave, now operational in over 1,100 fire service vehicles and 368 fire stations in Scotland, is part of a UK-wide project to provide the fire and rescue service with the equipment needed to respond to major emergencies including terrorism. When fully rolled out in July 2010, Airwave will be the new national communications service for the FRSs of England, Scotland and Wales.

Moditech Rescue Solutions will be one of the exhibitors for the six day event, being held from June 7th to the 12th. With the theme of “Know What’s Inside”, Moditech will be showcasing the different solutions available to emergency responders that can be used on-scene to access technical specifications of the involved vehicles in traffic collisions. This knowledge is becoming more and more important, in particular because recent incident reports show that rescuers are nowadays frequently struggling with new vehicle technology issues. Among those, hybrid and electric vehicles are a real hot-topic.

FOGTEC Fire Protection is equipping the Eurotunnel with its water mist fire fighting technology, making an important contribution to tunnel safety. The full-scale fire tests recently performed for this project have been the largest ever of their kind.

Estonian and Hampshire firefighters have been working together to develop the rope rescue skills of the Eastern Europeans. For one week three firefighters from the Estonian fire service worked with the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service rope rescue team learning new techniques and different approaches to support this important area of work.

The Passive Fire Protection Federation (PFPF) has announced a series of seminars on built in fire protection, to be held at venues around the country.  The seminars, which begin on 25th May with a “breakfast briefing” at the Building Centre in London, aims to promote better understanding of a range of issues relating to residential and commercial properties and current regulations governing fire safety.

Hazard detection specialist Groveley Detection has shipped its 600th gas detection aspirator. Groveley has supplied its gas detection aspirators (sampling systems) to oil, gas and energy installations around the world since 1993, monitoring smoke, flame and toxic gases. This unit - to be installed at ATCO Power’s Muskeg River cogeneration plant in Alberta, Canada  will monitor a gas turbine enclosure for potential methane leaks. It is the latest aspirator of five supplied to ATCO Power in Canada for gas turbine monitoring.

The IAFC (International Association of Fire Chiefs), in partnership with FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), is working to develop a stakeholder-driven resource-management data system. The system—the IMAS Resource Data, Dispatching and Demobilization (RD3) System—will support the American emergency-response community by automating resource-management activities associated with intrastate mutual aid.
