Firefighting in the high hazard industries is a specialist business. Incidents occur on a surprisingly regular basis globally. Gaining hands on experience with specialist equipment backed up by application knowledge and fixed system alternatives is always valuable, and, until now, a rare objective to achieve.

In the year 2010-2011, according to the United Kingdom HSE statistics 171 workers were killed at work, a rate of 0.6 fatalities per 100 000 workers, 26.4 million days were lost overall, on an average 15 days per case of work-related illness or workplace injury. In the Middle East as per the HSE statistics the most common reasons cited for fire mishaps are non-working smoke alarms: worn or missing batteries. The challenges that need to be tackled by communities and organisations world wide include confined space rescue, fire prevention in public transports, emergency preparedness, active and passive fire protection etc. The least organisations can do is to educate and make aware the workforce about measures to avert disasters, loss prevention, and post incident recovery.

High challenge warehouse fire protection strategies are of global concern to the fire protection community.  As new high hazard commodities appear in challenging storage arrangements, new approaches to fire protection are required. The National Fire Protection Association and the Fire Protection Research Foundation present a one day seminar on recent global research to address this challenge. The seminar will take place in Paris, France in Paris on June 27th, 2012, in cooperation with the European Fire Sprinkler Network conference at the Marriott Rive Gauche.

The IWMA's annual event will take place 14-15 November in Barcelona.

The U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) today announced the panel participants for its daylong public hearing entitled “Regulatory Approaches to Offshore Oil and Gas Safety” which will be held on December 15, 2010 in Washington, DC. The hearing is part of the CSB’s ongoing investigation into the April 20, 2010, fire and explosion on the Deepwater Horizon that killed 11 workers.
