MSA vertical compressors 280, 450 and 570

Published:  01 September, 2008

The moving components within this series of compressors have been electronically balanced to run smoothly, and are amongst the most silent in the market. MSA says this protects operators from noise and vibration while keeping in line with noise control laws within Health and Safety at Work Act.

The noise dampening is achieved by turning 8x90º the required cooling air flow in the housing, which results in comprehensive cooling of every compressor component, as well as efficient noise dampening. The noise caused by the compressor’s propulsion and compressor units remains “trapped” in its housing.

With (annual) professional care and maintenance MSA says the air compressor should last in service for around 20 years, at an average use of 100 – 200 hours of operation per annum. With more frequent use (larger filling systems) shorter service intervals are recommended however, and special maintenance work must be carried out once the maximum numbers of operating hours indicated by the manufacturer have been reached.
Maintenance training for work such as filter and oil changes is provided by the service provider, and a level of technical education and a grasp of theoretical basics (eg industrial safety regulations, technical regulations for pressure gases etc) is required of the maintenance operator.

Optional extras
The ECC Control provides an optimal, completely electronic and convenient control of breathing air compressors. This system is recommended for use with compressed air reservoirs (cylinders) installed in the pressurised air system to supply test benches and working air, given that in automated mode a low start-up pressure can be preset. In this way the reservoir cylinders remain full at all times.

A luminous LCD display provides relevant compressor data in six different languages, and a keypad is used to input data. Features include; equipment components information; integrated operating hours counter; remaining time to next service and remaining service life; spare part numbers display; variable adjustment of operating pressure for start and stop; error display; and automatic shutdown when malfunctions occur.

Another optional extra is the air quality control system, which is also available as a retro fit. The residual water content is permanently displayed in mg/m3 on a digital display and also represented visually using three coloured LEDs. The benefits include safety for breathing air filling stations/operators, and full use of the filter cartridge capacity (instead of having to guess the remaining service life).

Key facts
• Electric, gasoline and diesel mobile and stationary compressors available, ranging from 170 l/m to 570 l/m (except gasoline)
• low noise/vibration running: noise muted compressors:  <61-65 dB(A) at one metre distance (with extra large fan)
• minimal maintenance
• electronically balanced V-belt drive disks and crankshafts
• all stages with pistons and piston rings
• low pressure oil pump lubricates the last high pressure stage
• operating hour counter and liquid filled pressure gauge
• safety valve for each stage
• large variety of filling panels
• pressure reducer for simultaneous filling of 200 and 300 bar cylinders.
