'Too fat' firefighter wins back job

Published:  01 September, 2008

A Scottish firefighter that had been fired for being overweight was reinstated after meetings between unions and management.

Twenty stone Grampian firefighter Kevin Ogilvie, 46, had failed an annual fitness test.
The Fire Brigades Union was preparing to ballot members for strike action when the agreement was reached.

Ogilvie had been in the fire service for 22 years, and fellow firefighters pointed out that he should have been transferred to another role. The FBU claimed that the service could have given Ogilvie an investigation role rather than hiring retired firefighters.
