The Pitt Report
Published: 01 September, 2008
A report by Sir Michael Pitt has recommended that fire and rescue services should have a statutory duty for dealing with flood events.
In the UK firefighters are not obliged to respond to flood events.
The Chief Fire Officer’s Association has welcomed the report, Learning Lessons from the 2007 Floods, which sees the fire and rescue service as the most appropriate body to deliver on a statutory duty, co-ordinating the work of partner agencies and stakeholders. “We believe that Sir Michael’s recommendations will bring clarity to a situation which is presently confused – this can only be good for communities and those who will respond in the event of an emergency,” said President Steve McGuirk.
A key lesson of the summer floods, said the CFOA, was that local need will almost always require national mutual aid, “and this is what makes flooding a national issue which requires a national, properly resourced response capability.”
